The Application Process

The PANDA doctoral programme is currently accepting applications for the September/October 2026 intake. Check back regularly for a list of available projects. This is constantly being updated.

Even if you do not see a project that fits your interests in the current list, we strongly encourage you to engage with the application process. There is significant benefit in early entry to the applicant pool, as we will do our best to make applicants aware of new projects the moment they become available.

We operate a two-stage application process designed to match the candidates with the right opportunities:

Step 1:
Applicant Pool

Register for the Applicant Pool

To begin, please email us at panda@bangor.ac.uk. We will then schedule a quick callback to discuss your interests, background and to give you the opportunity to ask us some questions about the programme. This initial conversation allows you to enter our applicant pool.

Step 2:
Project Matching

Project and Supervisor Matching

Once you are in the applicant pool, we will work to match you with projects that align with your requirements and research interests. This stage includes a supervisor interview which will conclude with match confirmation.

Eligibility Criteria

Academic Background

A first-class or 2:1 honours degree in a relevant STEM subject (e.g. Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or Mathematics) is preferred. Equivalent industrial experience would also be considered during the eligibility assessment.

Flexible Grade Assessment

We are open to discussions with applicants who hold lower grades but possess relevant strengths or experience.

Alternative Pathways

We welcome applications from graduates of degree-level apprenticeships, mid-career switchers, and those returning from career breaks.

Vocational to Academic Pathways

We offer a dedicated transition to bridge the gap between higher-level degree apprenticeships and doctoral research. This includes a conversion MSc route designed by our partners at the University of Derby. Please get in touch at panda@bangor.ac.uk

Widening Participation

PANDA is committed to widening access; part-time PhD routes are fully supported for those with employment or other personal commitments.

Nationality and Residency

Due to conditions of funding, applicants must have Home Fees status and be eligible to work in the UK nuclear industry upon graduation.
